HomeKnittingDay 20 – Winwick Mum

Day 20 – Winwick Mum

There are not any prizes for guessing what the climate has been like in Winwick right this moment.  Even the canine stated, “Aw Mum, it’s a bit moist!” and we didn’t keep out too lengthy.  It’s been actually coming down in sheets for many of the day (our poor postie appeared like he’d been swimming), and any plans I may need had for going out within the backyard have been firmly shelved.  By no means thoughts wellies, I’d have wanted a wetsuit!

As an alternative, I made a decision to dig out my WIPs (work in progress) to see what was within the baskets.

Two wicker baskets on a pale wooden table. Each contains brightly coloured project bags. There are more project bags between the baskets.

There’s no naming and shaming happening right here – I’m not in in the slightest degree embarrassed at having so many initiatives unfinished as I do know I’ll return to them they usually’ll both get completed or pulled out.  I need to say that up till now, I’ve resisted frogging (as a result of pulling out your work sounds a bit like a frog … rip it, rip it 🐸 ) as a result of I’ve anticipated that ultimately I’ll return to complete every part, however right this moment I’ve a distinct view.

I made a decision a superb a few years in the past that life is simply too brief to battle on to the top of a guide you’re not having fun with, and I’m prepared now to use that precept to what’s in these baggage.  There’s a purpose why the initiatives in there are unfinished and I believe it’s time I used to be trustworthy with myself about whether or not they ever actually will get completed in any respect.

Would you like to take a look with me?

OK, first up is that this one.  It’s a Dorset Horn no-nylon yarn which has been indigo-dyed.  I used to be given it as a present a very long time in the past now (I’m not even positive if the dyer remains to be buying and selling!) and I had a few goes at knitting it up right into a sample but it surely didn’t appear to love any of them.

Two partly-knitted socks and two balls of purple-coloured yarn on a pale wood table. There is a red project bag in the top right hand corner and a selection of stitch markers, a tape measure and yarn cutter in the shape of a pink flower.

Ultimately I attempted them as plain TAAT (two at a time socks) however even that wasn’t snug to knit and I swapped again to a brief round – you may see how far I bought with a single sock.  I’m not completely positive what to do with this – the dye has light in locations and comes off in my palms so I’m not fairly positive how they’re going to clean and whether or not they are going to retain any color, though the yarn knits up extra like 6ply than 4ply so they might be a superb thick pair if I ever bought them completed.  Pure Dorset Horn is sort of rustic to knit with and the yarn doesn’t fly across the needles … they may make a superb Emergency Sock, maybe – and having wound the yarn into two balls I don’t actually know what else I might do with it!

I used to be very happy to search out my Herdy tape measure, although, together with a handful of sew markers (together with my gold sheep which is a favorite and I believed I’d misplaced) and the pink flower yarn cutter which was a surprisingly helpful journal reward.  That was positively definitely worth the effort of trying the bag!

Keep or go verdict …. ooh, undecided!

Subsequent … the earlier Emergency Sock to the one I’m knitting now – it’s my Neat Ripple Sock in WYS Blue Lagoon.  Now this sock has been on the needles for a ridiculously very long time – I believe I began knitting it when Blue Lagoon was newly launched and I don’t need to take into consideration what number of years in the past that was!

A striped sock in a ripple pattern is almost finished and the stitches are on holders. The rest of the ball of yarn and the project back are next to the sock.

These blues look beautiful, don’t they?  I introduced this sock in from the automobile as a result of I wanted to attempt it on earlier than beginning the toes, after which I wanted the round needle which is why it’s on sew holders, however I ought to actually get it completed and the second sock too.  I do like this sample and the sock very a lot.

Keep or go verdict … positively keep!

Now this one is a distinct story, and one which I believe has an ending that I’ve been avoiding.  The yarn is from Wool is the Reply within the shade Blueberry Mash and I began knitting these socks on vacation in August 2017.  I really like the yarn, I believed the sample (Angee by Cookie A) was nice, however for some purpose, I’ve fallen out of affection with it.  It’s fairly a busy sample and the yarn is fairly busy too and I haven’t actually had the urge to complete them though I’m half-way down the second sock now.  You may see after I final checked out them – on vacation in 2018!  I’ve even managed to lose the copy of the sample with all my notes on it so I don’t know the place I’m as much as on the chart … I believe that speaks volumes, doesn’t it?!

Printed tickets to the ABBA museum in Stockholm lie on a table next to a partly-knitted purple mottled sock.

As a lot because it pains me as there have been hours of labor in these socks, I believe I’m going to tug them out and reknit them as one thing else.  I’m considering the yarn would look good in a helical knit like these socks – I do like the best way this yarn knits up as it’s, however I really like the impact you get with helical knitting and I believe that as a result of the yarn colors have a lot to say for themselves, they might look putting with one other color too.  Ooh … however the considered pulling all of it out …

Keep or go verdict … reluctantly go.

Right here’s one other sock and a half – however this pair is unquestionably staying!  That is the prototype of my Falling Hues sample for my Autumn Leaves yarn; the sample was prepared in my head earlier than the yarn was able to knit with so I made a decision to get on with it and see the way it labored out.  Then, in fact, the Seasons yarns arrived one after the opposite and these socks bought put away in a undertaking bag.

The yarn is one which I had had in my stash for some time, a present from New Zealand, and I’m undecided in the event you can see the label however the yarn incorporates possum fleece.  You don’t get that in British yarn!  It’s beautiful and mushy and I really like the sample – these want to return again out into the sunshine and completed!

Keep or go verdict … positively keep!

One other single sock, this time in no-nylon Castlemilk Moorit and Blue-face Leicester from Dodgson Wooden.  This undertaking is so previous that Dodgson Wooden have rebranded!  It’s a DK yarn and I’ve used my Straightforward Colourwork Socks sample – however in fact the adjusted sample (the unique is designed for 4ply) and any notes I may need made usually are not with the sock so I believe that most likely explains why it bought left. Additionally, the contrasting colors aren’t actually very noticeable in most lights (this really isn’t a foul photograph) so I believe that may have contributed as effectively.

To maintain or to not maintain?  Properly, I don’t know what else I might do with the yarn and DK socks are fairly fast to knit up so I believe I’ll maintain it and make an effort to match the second sock.  It’d make one other good Emergency Sock as soon as the colourwork is completed.

Keep or go verdict … keep.

Oh my life, I’m getting proper to the underside of my pile now!  That is one other historical WIP; I don’t suppose that Victoria at Eden Cottage Yarns sells no matter this sock yarn was any extra as I’m fairly sure it was simply labelled “sock yarn” and I purchased it on the first ever Yarndale competition in 2013.  It was an early design try and I can’t inform you why I didn’t end it.

You may see all my lifelines operating by means of the sample!   There’s no restrict to what number of of them you may have and the yarn is sort of darkish to knit in what was fairly an advanced lacy sample in order that’s most likely why I finished.  That is one other one which I’m not fairly positive what to do with, though I’m veering extra in direction of letting it go.  I can use the sample for an additional design one other day.

Keep or go verdict … most likely go.

And right here’s the final one (effectively, not fairly however I’m ignoring the jumper that’s on my needles).  This can be a set of mini-skeins gifted to me by Claire from Cookston Crafts at Yarndale in 2018 which I made a decision to begin knitting into my Considerate Cowl sample in March 2019.  Why has it taken me so lengthy to complete it?  I’m undecided, actually.  I believe it’s as a result of I couldn’t fairly resolve how finest to put the colors so there was a good bit of ripping out after which different initiatives bought in the best way.  I do need to end this, although, as a result of I prefer it very a lot!

Not far more to be stated, actually!

Keep or go verdict … keep!

And there we’ve it.  Undoubtedly one undertaking to be frogged and re-knitted, and now that I’ve written about it, I’m fairly excited in regards to the thought of that.  I believe that the Blueberry Mash yarn goes to be my subsequent Emergency Sock, and I’ll see if I can end no less than one of many Neat Ripple socks earlier than the top of the yr.

Now that feels like progress to me!  What’s your WIP scenario like?
